Weeks 9-12 Milestones

Well we're at week 11 now! Yeah! The morning sickness is starting to subside, although I'm still real tired. I found this website that lists milestones by the month. Check out this month's milestones - go Zuzu!
  1. All of baby's organs are formed, and they will continue to grow and develop during the rest of the time in the womb.
  2. Baby's liver, spleen, and bone marrow start making blood cells this month.
  3. Baby's teeth begin to form; by the end of this month baby will have twenty little tooth buds beneath his gums.
  4. Fingernails, toenails, and rudimentary hair appear.
  5. Baby's intestines, previously part of the umbilical cord, now move into the abdominal cavity and become covered with skin.
  6. The tongue and vocal cords form this month.
  7. The circulatory system is operating, and heart valves are now developing, meaning a heartbeat can be detected by Doppler ultrasound.
  8. The external genitalia differentiate clearly into male and female so that by the end of the month ultrasound pictures can often reveal whether baby is a boy or a girl.
  9. By twelve weeks the head is around a third of the size of the body.
  10. Baby's tiny feet can now kick, but you are unlikely to be able to feel it yet.

Tara's Visit

Auntie-to-be Tara came for a visit this weekend! We had a blast! On Friday we went to Amy and Dave's annual Pumpkin Carving Party which is always fun! This year I carved baby Zuzu (see the picture)! I basically mimicked the ultrasound picture. I thought it looked convincing! Everett was inspired by the drill that Clay brought and designed his pumpkin around what he could do with that: bullet holes! So he carved a dead pumpkin with X's for eyes! Tara wanted to copy something she saw: 3 ghosts flying out of a caldron. Her's ended up looking like a very scary face! All three pumpkins were fun! I'll post more pictures when I get them.

On Saturday we headed to the Pumpkin Fest in Franklin with Doug. That was fun! We saw a lot of little babies and kids all dressed up for Halloween. Everett and I wanted to make an offer on some of the costumes for Zuzu for next year! We figure their baby will have grown out of that cute little Tigger/Pumpkin/Lady Bug costume and it will be just right for Zuzu! I think the highlight of the day for Everett though was seeing the storm troopers, Chewbacca, Anakin Skywalker, R2D2, and the other Star Wars characters. It was a fun time!

It was beautiful on Sunday so we went for a walk in Centennial Park before we had to drop Tara off for home.

All in all, a great weekend!!

Week 10

That's right, we're at week 10. Which means Zuzu is due on or around May 27, 2007. I particularly like this date given all the odd numbers! But if s/he is born on the 26th or 28th, I'll still be happy!

We've been reading all about our baby's progress in the various baby books we have (numbering about 5 or 6 right now). The web is a cool place to read things too. In particular, this page. It tells you all the goings on in the womb on a week by week basis. For example, this week Zuzu's rockin' and rollin'! That is, there's fetal movement going on. In fact, Zuzu waved to us with her/his little arm "bud" (hands and legs develop faster than the arms and legs) on the ultrasound! We also found out at the ultrasound that Zuzu is 2.8 cm (or 1.1 inches) long! Most of the length is his/her head though! hahaha The little brain is developing something like 100 million neurons a minute! My goodness!

Although the little bugger has either his testes or her ovaries already, there's no way to tell if Zuzu is a boy or a girl yet. That comes week 20 with the "big" ultrasound. We've already decided not to find out if Zuzu is going to be a girl or boy. We want it to be a surprise! So we're considering both boy and girl names, but we're keeping our choice a secret until Zuzu's birth day. A surprise for everyone!!

The first entry

Hi everyone!

We're pregnant!! And we're very excited!! The day we found out was one of the most exciting days of our lives. Can you imagine? We're going to have a baby!

Since many of our family and close friends live FAR away, we'd thought we'd keep a webblog for those who want to keep up with the progress.

First things first: We've given the baby a prenatal name. That way it has some identity other than "peanut", "alien", "parasite", "bean", etc. All of which are very good descriptions (well perhaps not quite the parasite namesake), but we decided to give it a name: Zuzu.

Zu-who? Zuzu! And here's where it came from:

It comes from a character in one of the most beloved Christmas movies, and I daresay movies, of all time, It's a Wonderful Life. Zuzu is the name of Jimmy Stewart's daughter who got sick at school and who brought home a rose. Stewart "fixed" the rose by putting the petals that fell off the flower in his pocket. Later in the movie when he becomes "unborn" thanks to Clarence The Angel, he reaches for the petals and can't find them. At the end of the movie when he returns to the living, he reaches for the petals and there they are - he is so overwhelmed with happiness when he finds them. In fact, "the petals from her rose symbolize the values of family, friends and life itself". Zuzu is the character who speaks the movie's most memorable line, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings".

We think Zuzu is a very fitting prenatal name!
