Oh baby!

We had another doctor appointment today and got to see our little babushka!

The picture on the top is our baby's brain! I asked the technician to take the picture. It was really neat to see all the layers of the brain. The baby gives a great profile too as the picture on the bottom proves! When the baby is moving, it's just amazing! You can see all the bones in the hands and feet and in the head. The technician stopped a few times so we could see the hands and feet - 10 fingers and 10 toes in all!

Everything tested out fine. They were able to see all the heart and face things they couldn't see last time, which is what made this visit necessary. We saw Zuzu open and close his/her mouth and sucking in amniotic fluid. Although the hand was above the face, Zuzu did not suck his/her thumb while s/he was on screen.

They still could not tell the gender of our little one! Everett says, "I have to admit that I didn't turn away when the lady doing the ultrasound told us to do so when she was trying to determine the sex, again I thought I figured it out, but come to find out, the technician couldn't either. Still a secret known only to Zuzu." So Zuzu likes a secret as much as his/her parents do!

For my next trick...

Well my "innie" is slowly becoming an "outtie". I thought I'd post some "artsy" interpretations of this recent pregnancy symptom.

I removed my belly ring on the 1st of the year. I was thinking of keeping it in for the long haul - the doctor said it was okay. But the ring started "moving" upwards and outwards. It no longer looked cute or rebellious (if it ever did). It just looked like a protrusion that needed to be removed.

Oh well, so it goes.

I can't see my feet

Here's a bird's eye view of my belly.

Can someone let me know if my shoes match?

A disturbance in the force

Well my belly and Zuzu are getting bigger every day! According to some estimates, Zuzu is almost a pound now! And the amazing thing is, I can feel the full force of his/her weight being thrown against my innards. S/he's a kickin' away these days!

A lot of people ask what it feels like and it's hard to explain, but I'll try. It's like when you remove the aluminum seal off of a cup of yogurt and you feel the tension inside the cup being released with a little "pop". Or it's like something is tickling you from the inside. Or it's like having a bit of a muscle cramp - but without the pain - you try to move to make the sensation stop, but you can't.

Most of the time I feel the little one kicking when I'm sitting or lying down. It's really weird at work when I'm reading some technical paper or writing computer code and I get a little reminder of the life within.

Well last night we hit a milestone: Everett felt the baby kick through my belly! We had just gone to bed and patted Zuzu goodnight and I told Everett Zuzu was kicking. I placed his hand on my belly where I felt movement, and all of a sudden - BAM! Zuzu gave one heck of a kick that Everett could feel! He wasn't sure if it was a kick or mine or his heart pulsating, but I assure you, it was a kick! I've been feeling these for a while now and I know what they are! He felt a few more kicks and then Zuzu was quiet again. It was a wonderful moment.

Our own solar system

Check out the baby's view! The planets revolve around the sun, which lights up.

You'll notice that the solar system consists of all 8 "recognized" planets plus Pluto. We're very retro!

I have a BABY in my belly!

So we went for our "big" ultrasound yesterday and we saw Zuzu! What a difference from the first one! Zuzu was 2.8 cm back then at week 10 and yesterday (we're at at week 21 now) s/he is about 10.5 inches!

Zuzu was not entirely cooperative though during the ultrasound...wonder which parent s/he gets that from!? According to Everett, "Starting to look more like me all the time I think. The baby was very squirmy and moving a lot but wouldn't uncross his/her feet from in front of the chest. We have to go back at the end of the month so they can check out all of the heart (couldn't see it all because of the feet). Everything else measured up great. They checked every major bone and even the nose. The doctor still doesn't know the sex of the baby (again with the legs crossed), so whatever guess I had watching the ultrasound only has a 50% chance of being correct."

In addition to the pictures they printed out for us, we also got a video! You can really see the baby well when it's all moving around (thanks to the gestalt principle of form from motion). They told us to bring the video tape back in at the next ultrasound so they can add more to it. Our baby's first home movie!

Mmmmm, I'm sitting in my office and I swear I smell McDonald's french fries somewhere in the hallway. And let me tell, you they smell good! With their oily nastiness and salty goodness, all small and mostly-bad-for-you-crunchy outside and barely-a-potato inside. Mmmmm!

No wait, I think I smell a toasted bagel with a little bit of butter on it. A plain bagel toasted just enough to make the outer part crunchy and the inner sides where you cut into it brown and flaky atop the steamy hot and doughy center of heaven. I could wash that down with a glass of chocolate milk easily!

And the other day arriving at Baby Depot I smelled an Auntie Anne's pretzel, fresh from the oven, steaming over with the artificial butter smell and the crunchy nugglets of salt magically stuck to the sides. You definitely need a napkin to eat those treasures!

The weird thing about all these things is that there are no McDonald's fries or bagels anywhere on this floor (I tried to track them down) and there isn't an Auntie Anne's Pretzel kiosk anywhere near Baby Depot. I'm starting to hallucinate food...and boy does it smell good!

Cribbity crib crib crib

We got Zuzu's crib this weekend and we think it's great! It's a sleigh-style crib - just the type of bed style we'd want if we were purchasing new bedroom furniture for ourselves. I hope Zuzu likes it. Oh who am I kidding?! Zuzu will like whatever we give her/him - s/he told me! The crib's neat, it actually converts to a toddler bed and then a full-size twin bed.

We also got quite the deal on our bedding set. It includes a bumper, sheet, quilt, and ruffle. It has moons and stars on it in blue, yellow, green, and pink.

After we set up the crib, we set up the double bed that was in there downstairs. We've got the perfect place to host visitors once Zuzu arrives! S/he will want to meet y'all you know!

Happy Half of the Way There!

Happy New Year! December 31st 2006 marked the last day of the year and the half-way mark of our pregnancy! That's right - we're at 20 weeks now! Twenty more weeks to go - give or take a few. I'm feeling great these days. Not as sick and full of more energy than I've had in a while. Yippee!
